CWOfficer_InGame

CWOfficer_InEngine

This is a Civil-War era officer, with Union and Confederate textures, for the Civil War time period in Darkest of Days.  The first two images are an in-game screenshot and a shot from the 8monkey model viewer, Jane Goodall.

The overall workflow of the character is a typical “next-gen” workflow.  I create a quick model, sculpt and detail it, then make the low-poly, lay out UVs, then texture.  Original texture res for everything is 2048.

I detailed the head model in ZBrush using a new workflow technique I found on ZBrush Central.  Basically, I took images of people’s faces in a very diffuse environment, mapped them onto this head, then used the composited image as a mask to sculpt the skin.  The result is that you get the details, like pores and pimples, from the map onto the model itself, and it matches up perfectly since you used the image to sculpt.  I could have just used the image as a bump map, converted it into a normal map, and then composited that with a lower-detail normal map for the head.  However, at the time I assumed the the model would be used for high-res closeups, so I figured the higher quality achieved with the extra tools was worth it.  In hindsight, the difference wasn’t very noticable since we decided to not do high-res closeups in-game, so it would have been a better decision to do things the faster way.
